In August 2018 Hanifa Yousoufi, 24, became the first Afghan woman to summit her country’s highest mountain, Mt. Noshaq.

At 15 years old, Hanifa had no formal education, was illiterate, and was forced by her parents into an arranged marriage. Through the Ascend program, and her own determination, Hanifa is now working toward internationally recognized status as a mountain trekking guide. She was formally recognized as one of her country’s female heroes by Afghan First Lady Rula Ghani.

The evening screening of this award-winning documentary about Ascend’s inaugural course will be hosted by renowned journalist, Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, Saraya will be joined by Ascend’s founder Marina LeGree for a Q&A session after the film. The afternoon screening features a version more suitable to a teenage audience.

In cooperation with The American Women’s Club of Berlin and Ascend: Leadership Through Athletics in Afghanistan.
