Machines, social media, hip-hop and soul: XJAZZ Festival pushes Berlin’s boundaries

Tired of catching jazz shows in stodgy concert halls? XJAZZ Berlin, which starts today, wants to shake up the paradigm of a typical European jazz festival. Co-founder Daniel Best and musician J.Lamotta joined us in the studio to talk about what's on this year at the festival.

XJAZZ Berlin, now in its fifth year, wants to change how jazz is showcased — everything from using smaller venues instead of concert halls to featuring experimental takes on the genre instead of standards from 50 years ago.

Co-founder Daniel Best and musician J.Lamotta joined KCRW Berlin in the studio to talk about what’s on this year at the festival.

XJAZZ Berlin runs May 8 through May 12.  Check our event page for more information.
