This afternoon (Friday, December 7) 1001 delegates will choose the new leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Angela Merkel’s time as party leader is coming to an end.
The two main contenders are Friedrich Merz and Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. We spoke to freelance journalist Erik Kirschbaum about what to expect from her potential successor, and the legacy Merkel leaves behind. “I think the world has seen the good side of Germany thanks to Merkel,” says Kirschbaum.
