On Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that she will step down as the party leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in December. Merkel’s decision comes after her conservatives suffered major losses in two recent state elections.
We spoke to Florian Gathmann, national correspondent for Spiegel Online, to discuss the who is favored in the upcoming leadership race between retired CDU politician Friedrich Merz, General Secretary of the CDU Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, and German Health Minister Jens Spahn, as well as the potential end of Merkel’s chancellorship.
