Terry McCarthy is a former journalist with an international perspective, one he seeks to use in his newest role as the president of the American Academy in Berlin.

McCarthy is aware of the significance of the Board of Trustees choosing the first journalist to head the organization (the three prior were academics). “I think the feeling was that the German-American relationship, which after all is what the American Academy in Berlin is tasked with supporting and nourishing, is currently somewhat strained,” says McCarthy.

We spoke to McCarthy about both his global and “Californian” perspective and why now is a good time to move his family to Berlin.
