The Bavarian state elections are this Sunday and the outcome could be a critical test for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc. We spoke to Henning Hoff, Executive Editor of the Berlin Policy Journal, about potential gains by the far-right Alternative for German (AfD) and the impact we could see locally and nationally.

Polls have shown that while the ruling Christian Social Union (CSU) may lose the absolute majority they have maintained in Bavaria for the past 60 years, the Green Party’s popularity has more than doubled since the last elections in 2013: “They are the most impressive opposition party right now,” says Hoff.
