Actress Sophie Berner has performed the role of Sally Bowles in the musical “Cabaret,” she estimates, nearly 1,000 times. It has been 12 years since she landed the role at age 21. “I just jumped in like a child would,” she says.
Berner is performing in “Cabaret,” in German, at Das TIPI am Kanzleramt through September 23. The musical, famously based on Christopher Isherwood’s stories from his time living in Berlin between 1929 and 1933, follows Sally Bowles, a nightclub singer whose life changes when she meets American writer Cliff Bradshaw, as the Nazis come to power. We spoke to cast members about their favorite moments and how the play remains relevant to a contemporary audience.
