“Hallo!” can be a greeting – nice to meet you! “Hallooo?” can be a question – is anybody home? “HALLO?!” can be a demand for attention – are you listening to me? “Hallo,” in all of its meanings, is the 5-letter word at the center of Turkish choreographer Aydin Teker’s contemporary dance piece, which recently had its German premiere at Tanz im August.

The 2013 Gezi Park protests in Istanbul served as Teker’s original inspiration, but she believes the meaning of the piece has evolved far beyond that: “It relates to human conditions. It reaches anybody – any age or any background -because we are human…and these feelings are in us.”
