This time last year, hundreds of Neo-Nazis gathered in Spandau to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of convicted Nazi Rudolf Heß. This year, despite attempts from politicians and other organizations to prevent it, another march is planned.
We speak to Ronja Ringelstein, reporter for Der Tagesspiegel, about the freedom of assembly that allows the march to happen. We also explore the efforts to stage counter-protests and a “Festival of Democracy,” which Michael Müller, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, has called upon the city’s inhabitants to take part in. “Maybe this Festival of Democracy can… really bring the people together against fascism,” says Ringelstein.
