American Artist Michael John Kelly is the current Berlin fellow of Villa Aurora, a unique cultural exchange program between sister cities Los Angeles and Berlin. We talked to him about his work processes, his famous namesake, and why he stopped listening to Kanye West.
His describes his work process, creating pieces using oil, acrylics and digital imagery. He brought 45 digital paintings with him to the residency and “when I got here I just started tearing them apart.” Kelly says: “for me it’s not about digital versus analogue, it’s about making everything feel handmade.”
