In protest against Berlin’s current housing shortage, activists occupied a couple of buildings in Kreuzberg and Neukölln this past weekend. Philip Kuhn, political correspondent for Die Welt, gives us the details of the demonstration and its political aftermath.

Kuhn describes the squatters as “a mixture of radical leftists but also students who are often unable to find an affordable place to live in the city.” More than the protest itself, Kuhn explains that the subsequent support by some Berlin politicians is something new: “What we can see here is pure hypocrisy; it’s the Greens and the Left parties’ job to solve the housing problem instead of supporting criminal acts.”
