New parade route and plan to tackle overcrowding at upcoming Karneval der Kulturen

It’s that time of year again: Karneval der Kulturen, or the Carnival of Cultures will take place from May 18 to May 21. The four-day festival in Kreuzberg is estimated to attract one million visitors in a program that showcases the diversity of Berlin, featuring a parade of elaborate costumes as well as spectacular music and dance performances.

“If you ever wanted to have a travel around the world and you couldn’t afford it, just come to Berlin and you have it there,” says Ruth Hundsdoerfer, one of the organizers of the event. She joins us on the phone to talk about a few changes this year, the plan for security, and why it’s important to support the festival.
