“We can learn a lot from hummus”: how Israeli-Palestinian restaurant Kanaan is using food to serve up peace

Berlin restaurant Kanaan prides itself on being an Israeli-Palestinian kitchen that serves up meals with a message of peace to its Prenzlauer Berg patrons. The two restaurant owners, Israeli Oz Ben David and Palestinian Jalil Dabit, use their cuisine of home-cooked dishes to show that the two cultures share common ground.

Building on the culinary traditions of both of their families, the two restaurateurs have created a shared community through their food in a time when tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are on the rise. Kanaan’s message is clear, says co-owner Oz Ben David: “We can learn a lot from hummus.”
