Over the past month, it’s possible you may have noticed an influx of emails from companies wanting you to confirm your newsletter subscription. Or maybe you’ve had to agree to new terms on Facebook and Instagram. The change is because of a European Union law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25. Gruber doesn’t think that users will notice a huge change to services on May 25, though she says there will be an adjustment period as businesses figure out how to navigate this new territory. Gruber believes that one positive outcome of the GDPR could be that companies will be prompted to change their attitudes towards keeping customer data because “with the data comes a lot of responsibility.”
