U.S. President Donald Trump’s official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has had a ripple effect across Europe. Protestors gathered in Berlin last weekend to demonstrate for a variety of reasons, said Martin Klingst, senior political correspondent for DIE ZEIT.
Klingst said demonstrators included people of Palestinian origin, Syrian and Iraqi refugees, Germans taking a pro-Palestinian stance, and people waving the Turkish flag. Some in the crowd burned Israeli flags and chanted anti-Semitic slogans, which resulted in swift condemnation from German government officials.
Monika Müller-Kroll speaks with Klingst about the reverberations of Trump’s announcement and the significance of anti-Semitic acts in Germany.
